What is a base course in pavement?

Base Course in pavements refers to the sub-layer material of an asphalt roadway and is placed directly on top of the undisturbed soil (Sub-Grade) so as to provide a foundation to support the top layers of the pavement. It is typically made of a recipe of different sizes of aggregate rock inclusive of 1″ to fine dust.

What is the difference between a base course and a sub-base?

This is known as a sub-base. After the gravel layer (sometimes crushed stone is also used), an asphalt base course is provided. On top of the asphalt base course, asphalt surface layer is provided. Surface course is designed to have better friction between tires and asphalt. Base course is designed to provide rigidity to the road.

What are base course materials?

In certain localities base course materials occur naturally as topsoil or deposits of sand clay, sand clay-gravel, and sand. They may occur as natural mixtures meeting the requirements, or two or more materials may have to be combined to produce mix-tures that meet the requirements.
